PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) Recipe


PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) is a combination of various physical and emotional symptoms that occur in some women for a week or two before menstruation. Emotional symptoms of PMS are irritability, tension, depression, fatigue and food cravings. Physical symptoms include breast tenderness, fluid retention, headache, backache and lower abdominal pain. It is generally thought to be caused by changes in hormonal levels at this time of the menstrual cycle, but possible contributing factors are a poor diet, stress and overwork. Certainly those factors can make the symptoms worse.

Essential oils are natural wonders that can help on both physical and emotional plains. I recommend three essential oils for PMS. Let me explain.

Clary Sage essential oil is a good tonic for the womb, regulating irregular perios and easing painful cramps in the lower abdomen. It combats excessive perspiration generally, and its euphoric properties lift depression and relieve tension and anxiety.

Geranium essential oil stimulates the adrenal cortex which in turn governs the balance of hormones. It can be used for pre-menstrual depression, lack of vaginal secretion and heavy periods and, with its diurectic properties, relieve inflammation and congestion of the breasts.

Rose Otto essential oil is a stimulation tonic for the womb, calming and regulating. it is also warming and uplifting for the emotions, relieving stress and giving comfort.

PMS Recipe


2 drops Clary Sage essential oil,3 drops Geranium essential oil,1 drop Rose Otto essential oil*,15 ml (1/2 fl oz.) sunflower oil,15 drops evening primrose oil

Mix all the above ingredients and store in a glass bottle or jar with a tightly closing lid.

Apply during regular full body massage, massage your abdomen daily one week before menstration or the onset of symptoms, use during bathing, and/or use as a personal perfume.

Other useful essential oils: Chamomile (German and Roman), Cypress, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Juniperberry, Lavender, Neroli, Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Ylang Ylang.
